Face to face counselling is a talking treatment and is the traditional way of experiencing counselling, where you travel to see your counsellor and talk about your issues in a confidential environment.
The main aim of counselling is to empower you to find a way to speak freely and in confidence to a professionally trained person, about the things that are having an impact on your life. A counsellor’s role is to build a professional and trusting relationship, creating the necessary conditions, so that you are able to feel comfortable enough to open up and explore your thoughts and feelings in greater depth. This will allow you to explore the strengths and resources you have in order to cope more effectively with issues that arise in your everyday life. Counselling is not about giving you advice or telling you what to do, but allows you the space to find your own solutions.

MAP counselling offers counselling using three major theories, psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural and humanistic. Psychodynamic theory advocates that events in our childhood shape our experiences as adults, therefore this effects how we are in the world, how we think and therefore how we behave. Cognitive behavioural theory examines faulty thinking patterns and looks at correcting false beliefs. Humanistic theory encourages individuals to explore their feelings and take responsibility for their thoughts and actions.
I believe that everyone has the capacity for growth and change; we never stop learning about ourselves no matter how old we are! I also believe that the relationship I build between myself and my client is fundamental to the success of the counselling I offer; therefore I feel it is very important to tailor the counselling to meet your needs. This is done by keeping a focus on your goals and what you would like to come away with, once the counselling has ended. Regular opportunities to review how you are progressing with counselling, along with “homework” is structured into your sessions. Homework is made up of various negotiated exercises, to encourage further self awareness and reflection in between sessions.

Art therapy can be tailored to fit in with your counselling sessions at any stage of your counselling experience, therefore its use is very flexible. I can recommend art therapy as a tool to use in our work together if I feel you would benefit from using it, however the choice to use this medium of non verbal communication ultimately rests with you.
An example of how I have used art therapy, with my clients, has been when I have felt they have been stuck or unable to move forward, or when they have found it difficult to understand their thoughts and emotions.
In all the time I have worked with art therapy, it has been received well and has been something my clients have wanted to continue with as they really enjoyed the process of expressing themselves this way. The appeal is that it has the capacity to open up lines of communication and it can also unravel a lot of unconscious information in a short space of time.
All materials are provided for you at no extra cost. You have full control over how to create your art work, including what materials to use and how to put it together. I will be present throughout the whole process, offering you support and coaching you on how to interpret what you have created.
If we run out of time during a session, you can take away your art work and complete it at home, ready for your next session. Once your art work is completed you can choose what to do with it, as it is a part of you. I have often found that individuals use their art work as a journal to look back over their counselling journey as it is easier to recall the stages of development and change.
For further information about art therapy see (Counselling Topics/Areas) or you can contact MAP Counselling on 07825627409.

The first session will give you an opportunity to talk through your concerns and it will also give you a flavour of how I work as a practitioner. This will allow you to assess whether I am the right type of counsellor for you and will allow me to assess your needs. This session will last an hour. Each subsequent session will last 50 minutes and will involve a commitment by you to attend a counselling session, on a set time and day once a week. Each session follows on from the previous one, and feedback is structured into your sessions, giving you the opportunity to talk through any additional issues that may arise from your therapy, allowing you to take an active lead in what happens in your sessions.

Face to face counselling takes place in various locations between the Surrey and West Sussex borders (close to Gatwick Airport). For further information contact MAP Counselling on 07825627409.

All the information you provide is confidential to MAP Counselling, including whether you are or have been a client.
MAP Counselling will not pass on or discuss any information about you. However there are several important exceptions: As part of ongoing professional development all counsellors must regularly engage in supervision. This means MAP Counselling clients will be discussed with another suitably qualified counsellor. Every effort is made to protect your anonymity , unless it is felt necessary to break confidentiality (see 3, 4 and 5 below).
The law requires all counsellors to report any suspicion of risk, of child abuse, or neglect. If MAP Counselling believes that a child is at risk of being abused, has already been abused or that someone who previously abused children is still a threat, MAP counselling must report the information to appropriate child protection agencies or police.
If MAP counselling believes that a person’s life is, or may be in danger, because of causing harm to themselves or harm to others, MAP Counselling will have to report the situation to the appropriate authorities.
Courts of law have the power to demand that MAP Counselling releases your records. If you are involved in a court case where your relationship to MAP Counselling is relevant, any details requested in this instance will have to be released.
